From Victory Circle to the Announcer's Desk, Hall of Fame Race Car Driver and Network Television Color Analyst Daly has spent nearly three decades as the face of the motorsport world. Derek Daly's professional racing career spanned 17 years, and his experiences are nothing short of breathtaking. Daly's story is one that precious few have lived to tell. In 1984, Derek suffered one of the hardest crash impacts that a driver had ever survived when he hit the wall at Michigan International Speedway at 212 MPH. After fourteen surgeries and three years in therapy, he returned to full-time racing. He competed in the 12 Hours of Sebring - one of the premier motorsport endurance races in the US -- and won the race two years in a row. Born in Dublin, Ireland to a middle class working family, Derek's career path was set at the age of twelve when he attended his first auto race. Wine country in the Finger Lakes region of New York that is home to Watkins Glen International. Watkins Glen is a quaint little village in upstate New York and when the track opened up, major series have raced there. NASCAR went there in the mid 1960s and would return in 1986. Formula 1 last raced there in 1980, but the track was abandoned and reopened in the mid 1980s. The final road course race of the season, but there is always next season. The return to the Irish Hills of Brooklyn, Michigan and the Michigan International Speedway. Home to the Big Three, but the backyard for our manufacturers. Everyone wants to win there, but we know who drew the lucky ticket. Finally, the return to Bristo, for night racing. Tough? You bet. A rare occasion we see is zero cautions. Good racing, although it may be different when we come back next season. Just sit back and watch the racing jump right at you through your screen, just watch for the sod that's kicked up by spinning wheels.
Something lurks in the dark...sounds a lot like an F4i. SR-4 makes its first runs behind the engineering building in time for the season's first competition at Michigan International Speedway next week.
